Cloud Governance Unlocks £4.6m Savings for Software Developer

ITAA’s FinOps team helped a software developer strengthen cloud governance, improve cloud financial management and unlock £4.6m in savings. Discover how.

Rapid cloud growth had created new financial and operational challenges for an international software development company. With annual Azure expenditure of approximately £15 million, the organization recognised the need for a structured FinOps approach to strengthen cloud governance, improve financial management and establish greater operational accountability, ensuring its cloud investment continued to deliver long-term business value.

To establish effective cloud governance and long-term financial control, the organization needed to address several key challenges:

  • Cloud adoption had outpaced governance processes, limiting financial oversight and accountability across the Azure estate
  • Broad administrative access allowed hundreds of users to provision cloud resources with minimal approval or cost management controls, resulting in uncontrolled spending and inconsistent resource governance
  • Without a structured FinOps operating model, the organization lacked clear ownership of cloud spend and a sustainable framework for continuous optimization

ITAA implemented a structured FinOps operating model, working closely with technical, finance and business stakeholders to establish sustainable cloud governance and establish sustainable cloud financial management. The engagement focused on three key areas:

  • Establishing governance, ownership and accountability for cloud spend.
  • Improving financial visibility and cloud cost management.
  • Embedding FinOps best practices to support continuous optimization and sustainable financial control.

Alongside new governance processes, ITAA helped drive a cultural shift towards greater ownership of cloud expenditure. Through stakeholder engagement, education and FinOps best practices, cloud financial management became embedded into day-to-day operations rather than treated as a periodic financial exercise.

Within weeks of implementation, the engagement had identified £4.6 million in annual cloud savings opportunities, equivalent to approximately 30% of the organization’s Azure spend. The largest opportunities were identified across:

  • £2.1 million identified through right-sizing and scheduling developer instances
  • £1.1million identified through Reserved Instances, AHUB and Savings Plans
  • £0.75 million identified through storage optimization

Beyond the immediate savings opportunity, the engagement also established stronger governance, clearer financial accountability and a sustainable framework for managing cloud costs as the Azure estate continued to evolve.

£4.6 million in identified cloud savings demonstrated the immediate commercial value of a structured FinOps approach. More importantly, it established the governance, financial discipline and decision-making framework needed to sustain those benefits, helping the organization maximize the long-term value of its cloud investment.

Organizations looking to build stronger cloud governance, improve financial accountability and establish sustainable cloud financial management can benefit from ITAA’s independent FinOps service.

  • ITAA helped us transform the way we manage cloud spend, giving us the governance, visibility and accountability needed to deliver sustainable cost optimisation across our Azure estate.
